What we do

Peace Education Initiative Rwanda (Peacedu) is a non-governmental organization which is engaged and dedicated in preventing genocide and mass atrocities through Education. Peacedu is more focused on teaching young Rwandans human rights, genocide studies, Peace education, and tolerance in order to build tolerant society with the hope of better future without hatred. It was founded in 2011 by professional and motivated Rwandan teachers who are engaged in healing wounds caused by 1994 genocide.

OUR approach

We use different approaches like dialogues, trainings, workshop and participatory methods such as critical thinking. Peacedu has been working with renowned organization to foster important approaches and methodologies that enhance higher critical thinking using different examples and inspiration. Through our education approaches, it is expected that young people that we work together on the daily basis will be able to make right and informed decisions with the overall goal of fostering harmony among Rwandan citizens. They will also be able to identify some challenges that grip them on the daily basis so that they can be in the right decision to confidently address those using collaborative efforts.

Trips and workshops

Peacedu organizes trips for teachers, students' club members as well as parents to different genocide memorials across the country. The trips and workshops help them to acquire knowledge about genocide prevention. Parents and teachers are always urged to instill skills of the critical thinking into their young minds because they are the cornerstone for hope of Rwanda. We also facilitate teachers to heal their wounds caused by genocide through storytelling. Therefore, they may become more confident in teaching such sensitive topics.

Trainings in Refugee Camps

In this time of unprecedented levels of global migration and refugee crisis, Peacedu staffs have a firm commitment that refugees need to become self-sufficient and restart their lives so that they can integrate into new society. Peacedu believe that the education should take the highest precedence. The organization works very hard to bring human rights education content to different communities existing in refugee camps on the Rwandan territory in order to help them learn about their rights and appreciate good effort and opportunities available for them. It also support refugee children clubs and teachers to understand basically their rights and history of Rwanda such that they can properly fit into national school systems while at the same time building lasting friendships with local children. They learn languages, and develop vital skills and values they need to sustain them and their families. Peacedu staff work tirelessly preparing the training packages to ensure that schools in the refugee camps become important and more relevant for those that have been torn from their homes and seen the horrors of war.

Research

Peacedu Initiative Rwanda is committed to documentation and preservation of stories in a digital way for research purposes. We are also planning to conduct researches on the impact of peace education in the aftermath of the genocide and encourage local and foreign researchers to conduct research on this important topic; this will also help the next generation to come to find rich information about the history of the Genocide against the Tutsis, the Holocaust and other genocides that took place all over the world hence cementing world peace and encourage critical thinking and clear interpretation of the history through accessing these stories.
